11 killed in road accidents on the first day of Water Festival

   
PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- At least 11 people were killed, and 11 others were injured in road accidents on the first day of a three-day Water Festival, according to a report of General Commissariat of National Police.

The report said six people were seriously injured in 14 cases of road accidents throughout the country, which destroyed 22 vehicles including 15 motorcycles.

The accidents were caused by high-speed driving, driving under effect of alcohol and other violations of traffic law, said the report.

Water Festival celebration enters second day on Thursday.

Tens of thousands of Cambodian people in provinces are flooding to Phnom Penh starting Wednesday in order to join the Water Festival, which is celebrated for the first time since the stampede on the last day of the event in 2010, killing 353 people.

Road accidents are the number one killer in the country. 1,630 people were killed, and 6,023 were injured in the first nine months of 2014, according to a recent report of the National Committee for Road Traffic Safety.
